About the Project
What Day Are You? is an illustrated children’s book by Steve Sombrero and Candice Sombrero Ishikawa, featuring artwork by Journey Flores. Set on the Hawaiian island of Oahu, the story follows MoCo, a curious sea turtle who discovers the importance of living in the present rather than dwelling on the past or worrying about the future. The book introduces younger readers to mindfulness, emotional resilience, and self-discovery through colorful characters and storytelling.
Working in collaboration with CWD, Brave Cat Digital handled the website’s design, development, and interactive animations. Built with WordPress and Elementor, the website transforms the book’s existing illustrations and visual assets into an interactive online experience. Our approach focused on preserving the character of the original artwork while creating a distinctive, modern design that feels like a natural extension of the book.
A major part of the development involved custom scroll-based animations that bring the supplied illustrations to life. Characters, flowers, and decorative elements move as visitors scroll through the pages, adding depth and personality to the experience. These interactions were integrated directly into the website’s layouts, allowing the illustrations to become an active part of the storytelling rather than simply serving as static decoration.
Beyond the visual experience, the website introduces the book’s story, its authors, and the inspiration behind its message. It also features a media gallery, reader reviews, and links to purchase the book through Amazon and other retailers. The interface was designed to remain clear and accessible across desktop and mobile devices.
The finished website combines custom WordPress development, polished visual design, and interactive animation to create an engaging online presentation of the book. By building around the supplied illustrations, we created a website that retains the personality of the original artwork while giving visitors a more interactive way to explore its world.
